German inland shipping operator HGK Shipping, in partnership with Dutch solar technology firm Wattlab, has introduced the Blue Marlin, the world’s first inland cargo ship to use solar power to support its propulsion system.
Equipped with an advanced hybrid setup, the vessel integrates solar energy not only for hotel loads but also for powering the electric drive system. This shift enables a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, particularly during peak energy demand, thanks to a system known as peak shaving.
An automated energy management platform intelligently distributes the energy across all operational systems onboard, optimising performance and lowering environmental impact. The Blue Marlin also offers limited solar-only sailing when lightly loaded, particularly on downstream routes, highlighting its capability for green logistics in real-world conditions.
This innovation builds on HGK’s previous solar effort with the MS Helios, which holds the record for the largest solar array on an inland vessel. However, unlike its predecessor, the Blue Marlin marks a true leap forward by extending solar utility to propulsion, making it a milestone in sustainable inland cargo movement.
As the logistics industry continues to pursue decarbonization goals, the Blue Marlin sets a compelling precedent for cleaner inland freight operations.
