The top nine global carriers belonging to the Digital Container Shipping Association have decided to implement an electronic bill of lading (eBI) based on DCSA standards by 2030. This is a significant step towards a digital transformation for the industry. The transformation from manual to digital could save stakeholders $6.5 billion in direct costs as carriers issue over 45m bills of lading every year. Till now only 2.1% of this has been converted to electronics.

Thomas Bagge, CEO of DCSA states that the digitalization of global trade is an important step towards the world economy for it will enhance the trade and eBI will further add to it. This will start a new era in container shipping as the industry moves towards paperless trade. Along similar lines, Mr Vincent Clerc the new CEO of AP Moller –Maersk said that the need of the hour is digitalization in logistics and the process should be quickened up to see the urgent change.
