Operations at the Port of Salalah in Oman were temporarily suspended after a drone attack struck fuel storage tanks within the port area, highlighting the growing security risks facing maritime infrastructure in the Middle East.
Shipping agencies confirmed that all terminal operations were paused until further notice, with port operator advisories issued to customers and logistics partners. Global shipping major Maersk also reported that activities at its terminal facility were halted while staff followed evacuation protocols to ensure safety.
The APM Terminals facility in Salalah serves as a critical regional hub for Maersk and its alliance partner Hapag-Lloyd, making the port a strategic node in East–West container trade routes connecting Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Disruptions at this hub could therefore create ripple effects across regional supply chains and container transshipment flows.
Security analysts say the incident reflects broader geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, where drone and missile attacks targeting energy infrastructure and maritime facilities have increased in recent weeks. While no casualties were reported, the event underscores the vulnerability of global trade infrastructure to geopolitical conflict, raising concerns about port security, shipping reliability and potential freight market volatility.
