NYK Bulkship (Atlantic), a Belgian subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has planned to induct a wind-assisted ship-propulsion unit on a bulk carrier engaged in a long-term charter contract with Cargill.

NYK has selected the VentoFoil wind-assisted propulsion unit from Econowind in the Netherlands. It comprises a flat rack container with no walls and has a 16 m vertical wing that works as a sail. The installed wings help to take the wind through its suction port and create propulsion by strengthening the pressure difference on both sides of the wing. The unit is smaller, easy to install and relocate and manages cargo handling seamlessly.
