Japan’s Mitsubishi and Engine manufacturer WinGD, (Chinese state-run shipbuilding group CSSC) have agreed on a partnership for ammonia-fueled vessels. In the project, WinGD will be taking care of implementing its X-DF-A ammonia-fueled engines to a wide range of vessel designs and Mitsubishi managing both the design of the vessels and completing the fuel chain using its ammonia fuel supply system.

The WinGD will assist Mitsubishi with the specifications to install engines for all auxiliary fuel systems, while Mitsubishi will design the vessels and further create its existing AFSS for use with WinGD’s ammonia engines.

The head of the marine engineering department at Mitsubishi, Manabu Kawakado said that this partnership is an important move for both companies as their efforts will be considered as an advantageous move to meet IMO decarbonization targets and will pave a path for the new generation of technology adopted to the gamut of vessels over the next decades.

The project will initiate in the third quarter of 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2027 with vessels in service.
