Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways has recently stated that India is in dire need of a road map for the green shipping sector to help reduce carbon emissions and a strategic approach to introduce renewable energy and green hydrogen. While addressing a session on Instruments and Leadership for Inclusive Green Growth at World Sustainable Development Summit 2023 in New Delhi, he said green growth is a critical initiative and the need to focus on meeting the target of decarbonization by 2030 and net-zero goals for 2070. The shipping sector promotion was included for passengers and freight through PPP mode in the budget.

He further stated that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is joining hands with TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) to set up the country’s first National Center of Excellence in Green port and shipping at Gwal Pahari. This centre of excellence will play a key role in developing a regulatory framework and alternate technology adoption roadmap for the green shipping sector in India.
