Container ships are set to begin operations between Mongla and Chattogram ports, marking a significant milestone in revitalising Mongla Port, Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport. After years of challenges, Mongla Port has seen growth and profitability due to ongoing development projects, attracting more commercial vessels and generating local employment.

However, the port still faces navigability issues, underutilised facilities, and high operational costs. These challenges have limited container movement to just one vessel per month, despite the region’s strong export potential, particularly for fish, frozen goods, and jute.

Chattogram-based Sea Glory Shipping has taken the initiative to operate small container vessels along this domestic route. Their plan involves transporting empty containers from Chattogram to Mongla, where they will be loaded with export goods and sent back for international shipping. This approach will reduce costs and transit times compared to direct transhipment from Mongla, which remains expensive and slow.

This new initiative is expected to enhance the efficiency of trade between the two ports, benefiting exporters and the national economy by creating more affordable and accessible trade routes.
