The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has announced a substantial increase in port service tariffs, marking the first such hike in decades. The new rates, which have yet to be officially gazetted, have raised concerns among port users and industry stakeholders. While the CPA justifies the increase as necessary due to the long interval since the last adjustment, many in the shipping community argue that the timing is detrimental to businesses already grappling with global economic challenges.

The Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association (BSAA) has expressed strong opposition to the hike, stating that the proposed increases are significantly higher than what had been suggested by industry stakeholders. They caution that the tariff surge could lead to increased costs for importers and exporters, potentially affecting consumer prices and overall trade volumes.

The new tariffs are expected to impact various service sectors at the port, including container handling, vessel services, and storage fees. Exporters, in particular, are concerned about the added financial burden, which could diminish the competitiveness of Bangladeshi goods in international markets.
