The Port of Virginia has expanded its inland reach with a new rail service to Indianapolis, operated by CSX. The service offers a five-day transit time, providing shippers with a more direct connection between the US East Coast gateway and the Midwest.
The new route allows containers to move directly into Indianapolis by rail, avoiding the traditional routing through Chicago followed by southbound trucking. This could help shippers reduce exposure to congestion in Chicago’s busy rail and drayage network while improving access to distribution operations across central Indiana.
Indianapolis also offers strong onward connectivity, with major interstate links placing a large share of the US population within a one-day drive. The Port of Virginia’s continued investment in rail infrastructure, including expanded capacity and reduced rail dwell times, is strengthening its role as a gateway to key US inland markets.
