The United States government has announced temporary adjustments to its Section 232 tariffs on imports of steel, aluminium, and copper, with the changes taking effect on 8 June 2026 and remaining in place until 31 December 2027. The adjustments were made pursuant to a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on 1 June 2026, and implementation guidance was issued by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on 5 June 2026.

Under the revised framework, agricultural equipment such as combines and harvesters will face a reduced tariff rate of 15%, down from the 25% rate that had been applied to derivative steel and aluminium products following an earlier proclamation in April 2026. The 15% rate will also apply to certain residential HVAC systems and components. Additionally, the scope of the 15% tariff has been expanded to include mobile industrial equipment imported from countries subject to the tariff.

Steel racks and aluminium lithographic plates have been added to the list of derivative import products subject to a 25% tariff. Under a new provision, foreign companies that use at least 85% US melted and poured, or smelted and cast, steel or aluminium by weight may qualify for a reduced tariff rate of 10%.

The proclamation states that these modifications are intended to account for certain products' roles in productive economic activity within the United States. The broader Section 232 framework — which applies tariffs to the full customs value of steel, aluminium, and copper imports — was significantly strengthened in April 2026, with goods made almost entirely of the relevant metals facing a 50% tariff, and certain derivative products facing a 25% tariff.
