Autonomous navigation expedition between Korea and Taiwan completed

Samsung Heavy Industries, a South Korean shipbuilder has successfully displayed a demo of the autonomous vessel navigation from South Korea to Taiwan, marking it the industry’s first.

The demo involved the setting up of Samsung’s self-developed remote autonomous navigation technology, known as Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS), and the smart ship system SVESSEL on a 15,000 teu container ship.

Between June 26 and July 1, 2023, the autonomous vessel successfully navigated about 1,500 km from Geoje to Jeju Island and Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan.

Other pioneering autonomous trials are ongoing across East Asia.
