Iran is taking strategic steps to expand its shipping routes to West and Southwest Africa, following a decision by the African Affairs Task Force led by the country’s first vice president. According to Mohammadreza Safari, Acting Director General for Africa at the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPO), this move is part of a broader initiative to strengthen Iran’s trade presence in Africa.
Currently, Iranian shipping lines operate between Iran and East and North Africa, with vessels making regular stops in Tanzania, Kenya, and Libya. These routes function on a monthly or bimonthly basis, depending on trade volume and logistical needs. The newly proposed expansion will create additional maritime connections, facilitating greater trade opportunities.
Iran prioritizes trade with African nations where it has embassies, trade centers, and commercial attachés, such as Kenya, South Africa, Algeria, and Nigeria. The country primarily imports minerals, agricultural products, and precious stones, while exporting petrochemicals, industrial equipment, and machinery. However, African nations are increasingly favoring local production investments over direct imports.
With these developments, Iran is positioning itself as a stronger trade partner in Africa, leveraging barter agreements and new investment models to expand its influence in the region.
