The Bhutan-based media have reported that the Government of India has allotted Rs 120 billion for the expansion and modernization of railway infrastructure in the northeastern region of the country with Bhutan to promote trade and tourism. This will be the first-ever Bhutan-India railway link.

The new railway project will link Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Sarpang, Bhutan. The project’s anticipated completion date is set for 2026. The new project will be a game changer in terms of facilitating the export of goods, and bolstering bilateral ties between the two nations.
